DESCRIPTION
Parents and Children in Transition (PACT), is a program of the Hampshire County Bar Association, Northampton, Massachusetts. It is an educational program designed to help parents reduce the negative effects of divorce and related family changes on their children.
The PACT program is open to the public. The Massachusetts Division of Probate and Family Courts requires attendance at a PACT program by both parents in Hampshire County cases which affect minor children such as divorce or modification of custody and/or visitation. Parents are required to attend separate sessions. After attending the program, participants will receive a certificate and their attendance will be certified to the court.
The PACT program consists of 2 two-and-one-half hour workshops which focuses on the needs of children when families are in transition. The sessions are facilitated by a male/female team of child development and parent education specialists and consists of video, role plays, presentation of information and discussion.
The material covered in the PACT program includes the effects of divorce on children at different ages, the grief process experienced by adults and children, how to listen to children's concerns, what children need to know from their parents and how parents can increase the child's chance of healthy adjustment.
